EASTEDGE RESORTS, Creative Support to Tohoku

FEBRUARY 18, 2012

一つ目は、SPREAD(クリエイティブユニット)の「Life Stripeワークショップ。

EastEdge Resorts is planning various projects involving modern art and healing tourism, in cooperation with its affiliate Nagano company, Nozawa Hospitality, and Azumaya Resort near Karuizawa.  The “Live Colorfully!” project intends to give a breath of fresh air to elementary kids from Minamisoma.

The concept of “Live Colorfully!” is that we can bring color to life through creativity and action. Color is expressed by creativity, liveliness, activeness and self-expression. To color moments of life is to give meaning to each of these moments, creating a movement of color and action that brings beauty to life.

EastEdge Resorts is inviting elementary school children from Minamisoma at Azumaya Resort in the Sugadaira / Azumaya Mountain Highland above Ueda Nagano (near Karuizawa) from March 31 through April 2 and holding an art workshop in collaboration with Chie Sumiyoshi, the art producer of TRAUMARIS Space, as part of the “Live Colorfully!” project. The children will enjoy two nights stay at the hotel with natural hot spring spa baths and outdoor activities in its 100 acres of natural forest and participate in several creative workshops as a gift of `healing tourism` from EastEdge Resorts and Nozawa Hospitality.

On April 1, two workshops will be held. The Life Stripe Workshop will be conducted by Spread creative unit: participants will create an artwork of colorful stripes that describes one day of their life, which will be displayed on the wall so that all members can freely discuss about their creations. The `Rocket Oven` workshop will be conducted and directed by Hitoshi Nishiyama, a sculpture artist and craftsman. At the workshop, compact rocket ovens of high combustion efficiency will be built using familiar and readily available materials and will be used to bake bread. The ovens can be brought home, donated to shelters in devastated areas of Tohoku or used for further eco-friendly outdoor gourmet workshops at the hotel.

In the evening after dinner, children will enjoy live painting entertainment by French artist, Julie Blanchin.

The finished “Life Stripe” artworks and videos of the workshops will be exhibited, under permission of participants, at public halls or private galleries in order to collect donations for the reconstruction of Minamisoma. Children will contribute to the restoration of their home town with their imagination and creativity. It is our mission to provide the children with encourage and strength to create their own future.

The “Live Colorfully!” charity tour has been realized by the cooperation of Save Minamisoma Project and the sponsorship of the University of Southern California Alumni Association Tokyo Club.

The “Gambatte365” project, whose mission is to keep awareness of renewal in Japan for at least a year, will contribute by producing a video of the event, which will feature themes like life conditions in Minamisoma and the way a charity tour can help supporting people from areas hit by the 3.11 disasters.

Eastedge Partners Aiming to Increase Attractions in Nozawa Onsen through Art

January 11, 2012

EastEdge Partners, Inc. (headquartered in Tokyo, President: Jason Holt), in collaboration with Nozawa Hospitality, is working on several art projects to spice up life in Nozawa Onsen village and ski resort.

Jason Holt, President of both EastEdge Partners and sister company Nozawa Hospitality, is striving to create opportunities in the small village that deeply impressed contemporary artist Okamoto Taro’s in 1974― for a ‘slow’ and relaxed appreciation of art coinciding with the village atmosphere.  President Jason Holt said: “The historical link between Nozawa Onsen and art is very strong and we intend to further emphasize this relationship in order to contribute to the village revitalization.”

At present, the main ongoing art and creative projects in Nozawa Onsen are “Art Café Hütte” and “The Craftroom.” These are in addition to well known existing village galleries “Oboroduki no Yakata” with regular themed exhibitions and the “Ski History Museum”

Nozawa Hospitality, in collaboration with Utte (artist consortium support company and dealer of art goods), in December 2012 opened “Art Café Hütte”, a creative space dedicated to the exhibition and sale of art goods and located inside Address Nozawa, a contemporary designer apartment hotel opened in August 2011. The concept of Hütte is “an artistic mountain lodge with Scandinavian design flavor” With its simple and modern interior design, it is an ideal location to admire and buy original pieces of art or just relax reading a book, tasting good coffee and eating a piece of hand-made cake. Utte and Nozawa Hospitality plan to jointly hold regular workshops and art events in the future months.

“The Craftroom”, an internet café and video creation space is located just in front of the Nagasaka Gondola in Nozawa Onsen ski resort, and was opened in December 2012.  It is currently operated by Tokyo producers in collaboration with Nozawa Hospitality. Professional and amateur film makers have worked together to provide guests with all the tools to edit and produce video material taken on the ski resort’s slopes and in the local area. This creative space is set to become a cool gathering spot for skiers and snowboarders in winter and mountain bikers, hikers and skaters in other seasons.  Contests and events will be jointly organized by “The Craftroom” and Nozawa Hospitality.

In addition to the above projects, Nozawa Hospitality has started in January 2012 the series of events “Urban art meets traditional Japan.” Suiko, from Hiroshima, and Skope, from Singapore, two internationally accomplished urban artists, have worked in residence in Nozawa Onsen’s event space “The Dojo” from January 5th-8th, with the art show on the evening of January 7th.  The concept of the event was to keep alive the memory of artist Okamoto Taro and bridge the gap between contemporary art and Nozawa Onsen’s traditional culture through the work of two international urban artists. Nozawa Hospitality plans to organize similar events with other contemporary genre themes in 2012.
